How it was made – Kitty Cola

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]A video of one of my recent works as it was created. “Kitty Cola” was inspired by an early calendar print showing a lady pilot enjoying a refreshing cherry cola.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_video link=”https://youtu.be/G8C3mK128Io”][/vc_column][/vc_row]

How it was made – Purrin Down the Highway

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_empty_space][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_empty_space][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

Like most of my pieces I start with one main character and work out from there.  This piece was started on 11×14 Strathmore Bristol Board using Prismacolor Pencils.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Beginning the details on the motorcycle.  The point was to make it fun, not too realistic.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_empty_space][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]The bike is complete and now his girlfriend in her cute leather shorts.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_empty_space][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

Now some fun secondary characters.  They were reminding my of the ones from the western scene in the old Disney “America Sings” ride.  I can still sing the entire show by heart![/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_empty_space][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]We have a stretch of highway!  A little more movement.  Some nice rocks and scrub.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_empty_space][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]A little more scrub to show some perspective and some beautiful mountains in the back.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_empty_space][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_single_image image=”2131″ img_size=”full” add_caption=”yes” alignment=”center”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

This is the final piece with all of the background added in.  It was originally created for two of my favorite people, Barb and Tom.  It was great to get inspiration from them.

How it was made – Wizard of Pawz

[vc_row][vc_column width=”1/4″][vc_single_image image=”2114″ img_size=”medium”][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/4″][vc_single_image image=”2115″ img_size=”medium” alignment=”center”][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/4″][vc_single_image image=”2113″ img_size=”medium”][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/4″][vc_single_image image=”2112″ img_size=”medium”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

The artwork began as a series of sketches to get the feel of the characters.

In the beginning stages I was exploring a more babyish look to the group.

[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_empty_space][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_empty_space][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

The final sketch was drawn on a 20×24 piece of Strathmore Bristol Board.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]I now start adding some of the basic colors using Prismacolor pencils.  At this stage I am starting to block in my color palette and put in details like the eyes.  If the eyes are wrong, then its time to start over.  Colored pencil does not allow for much erasing.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_empty_space][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Working on the Scarecrow.  I like to finish up one character at time.  There is probably eight hours of work in just this one character.

[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_empty_space][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

Now it’s on to the Tinman.  He was a lot of fun to design with his monochrome colors.  He has a really sweet look  to him.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_empty_space][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Now on to Dorothy.  All of those little squares on her dress!  Look, Toto is a guinea pig, because, of course he is… a cat can’t carry a dog.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_empty_space][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text] Finally the Cowardly Calico Lion.  He was a challenge because he is really a cat.  How to make a cat into a Lion?  I decided to make a lion into a cat. And yes, Calico Cats can be boys.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_empty_space][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_single_image image=”2116″ img_size=”large” add_caption=”yes” alignment=”center”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

This is the final piece with all of the background added in.  One of my favorites.  Lots of color and fun.
